BioCarbon Engineering aims to change the world through the use of drones: They want to plant 1 billion trees via drones. The goal is to counter industrial scale deforestation through industrial scale reforestation.

Why not use drones to plant trees?

Drones planting trees... what more to say?

Actually, there is more to tell. The startup's vision seems easily understable. But when you look at their founder's credentials, you realise that it cannot be easy to plant trees with drones - someone would have done it, right? However, Lauren Fletcher with his 20 years of experience as an engineer at NASA had the idea for this startup company.

Detail work included

Today, trees are planted by hand as they did it 500 years ago. There lies an opportunity, but at the same time a big challenge. As foresters know their groves, drones need information in order to plant the trees properly. It is not only about drones flying 5 meters above the air to shoot seed filled bins into the soil. Today, this can be managed through the use of GPS tracking. Moreover, the soil's nutrients have to be determined in order to optimally plant trees.

Why should someone care?

Industrial scales

While there are around 15.3 billion trees destroyed each year reforestation by hand can't keep up with this industrial scale of deforestation. Therein lies the vision of the company: industrial scale reforestation through the use of new technologies. More specifically, the use of drones whose technology recently is getting more and more advanced. Also, the drones will be used in order to monitor the health of ecosystems.

Calling attention to climate change

BioCarbon Engineering participated in the UN's climate conference COP21 in Paris. They presented the company and its vision in front of the world's climate community! Also, they presented their drone at the booth of a soil productivity and plant growth company they even may partner with.

Future outlook

Where else to go from here? Surely, they still have to go a long way in order to reach their goal of planting 1 billion trees. But, they really seem keen to realise their vision. The opportunity to change lives by having a big impact on climate change surely powers their ambitions.
